Carl Sagan’s Ghost « At the End of It All »

Carl Sagan’s Ghost is an ambient music project of the American composer Daniel J. Davis. With a name like this it is obvious that I need to show it to you!

At the End of It All is an album from 2009.
cover
At the End of It All was released on 4th of December in 2008 on the netlabel Soft Phase under a Creative Commons license.

The music is a very quiet electronic ambient album. It has a drone in most of its tracks with very subdued melodies and - at least to me - an early eighties feeling. Some of the tracks seem like Vangelis making space drone. Most critics gave this album rave reviews. It deserves a whole lot of the appreciation but unless you’re in a somewhat meditative or relaxed mood it may not carry you through its entire length. Beyond that it is just wonderful.

Xenofish « Datastasis »

Xenofish is the German producer Christian Becker. Datastasis is his fourth album.
cover
Released on 17th of July in 2014 through Ektoplazm under a Creative Commons license, Xenofish has created an album that takes a playful attempt at psychedelic drum & bass that digresses into any genre neighbouring with electronic psy music that Christian Becker felt likely intrigued to explore. The result is surprisingly concise and plays like charm. The worst I can say about this album is that in the end the album as a whole makes a better impression than each single track on its own. But then again, this weakness is also its force.

Mellow Sonic « Dreamcatcher »

Mellow Sonic is one of the many projects of German producer Sandro Kreher.

Dreamcatcher is maybe its 22nd album (judging by Discogs’s list).
cover
  1. Twilight Skies feat. Shen Nevan 6:39
  2. Monsoon Flowers 8:41
  3. Discovery 6:39
  4. Icarus 6:35
  5. Frequency 5:55
  6. Pandora 7:20
  7. Nanobots 6:06
  8. Dreamcatcher 6:05
  9. Sapphire 6:42
  10. Terminal 6:21
  11. Intergalatix 7:45
  12. Meltdown 5:10
Originally I didn’t want to include this album, self-released on 3rd of September in 2014 through Ektoplazm under a Creative Commons license, due to its weak beginning but upon listening the whole album decided to give you the pleasure.

What’s wrong with the beginning? Well, the music is promoted as being psychedelic drum ’n bass but even Sandro felt that the first track digressed too far that he invoked his alias Shen Nevan, used for post rock music, as an indicator for the difference. And after that it takes a while to get into the spirit of psychedelic and atmospheric drum and bass. It’s overall effect remind me of the 2003 sci-fi horror film with the same name adapted from Stephen King’s novel: I quite liked it but felt it will hardly convert anyone who doesn’t already like this kind of thing and even those will have a thing or two to complain. Still, you might want to give it a try…

False Identity « Community of Me EP »

False Identity is the psy dub project of Charles Bartlett from Salford in the UK.

Community of Me is his first release.
cover
The Community of Me EP was self-released on 15th of November in 2014 by False Identity under a Creative Commons license. It’s an EP with three psy dub tracks, with psy dub being ambient dub with a psychedelic soundscape reminiscing the way psytrance or psybient creates it atmosphere. It’s distinct reggae feel is a bit unusual at first but eventually makes perfect sense.

Reflection « The Art of Magic »

Reflection is the dark prog-psy project of Gibb Tartaris, a music teacher from Canberra, the Australian federal capital.

The Art of Magic is the autobiographical tale of a “mathemagician” on a journey to discover frequencies and wavelengths infused with a perfect balance of mathematical and magical harmonies. In essence, this album attempts to use the power of mathematics to trick people the way a magician would.
cover
The EP The Art of Magic was released on 1st of August in 2014 by Glitchy.Tonic.Records under a Creative Commons license. While released for free, you may want to support the artist and buy the album from Bandpage.

Musically it’s a somewhat subdued progressive psytrance with nice sound effects - I guess being subdued with sound effects is what all the sites call the zenonesque bit of progressive trance. I personally prefer my psy with a bit more oomph because at an average of eight minutes a track appears to have never gone off the ground but still, it’s nice and maybe never going boom is a paradox worthy of Zenon of Elea.

Kalila wa Dimna // Liquid Frequency

Kalila wa Dimna is a compilation of dark and forest psytrance from India which in itself is fascinating with Goa being the father of psytrance and all. It was compiled by LiquidNoize and released by Liquid Frequency.
cover
Kalila wa Dimna was released on 21st of December in 2010 via Ektoplazm under a Creative Commons license. As I’ve mentioned before, this is a compilation of Indian psytrance, primary source of my initial fascination. The artwork by Arnab Basu helped too. But the overall effect was less awe-inspiring than I had hoped for. Still, not a bad track to be found. Best tracks are Anasazi by Farebi Jalebi, Sample Based Bug by BrainDrop and Apocalyptic Vision by Hydropanic.

mindthings « Life’s Path »

mindthings is the downtempo project of Clément Peres from Bordeaux in France.

Life’s Path was his second album by Jamendo.
cover
Life’s Path was released on 5th of February in 2007 under a Creative Commons license. It’s electronic downtempo music with a good deal of piano-playing and an occasional beat. The Last Time on This Earth features vocals by Maya de Luna, not exactly a favourite of mine; I've never been a fan of this kind of dream pop. But Emotion Vibes is worth a repeated listen…

pan « Sick Monkey »

pan was the initial name of Maik Sommer’s music project that he started in 2005. He later renamed it to pan:core.

Sick Monkey is the first release of this young project, released by Jamendo.
cover
Sick Monkey was originally released on 28th of July in 2006 (in lossy MP3 and Vorbis) and later (on 3rd of November 2009) released in lossless FLAC under a Creative Commons license. Maik simply used the electronic and experimental tags to describe the music; it is descriptive of the approach but not the style. I would describe it as noisy (as in power noise) and technoid industrial music.

Cosmic Replicant « Soul of the Universe »

Cosmic Replicant is the ambient/downtempo/trance project of Pavel Shirshin from Kazan in the Russian Federation.

Soul of the Universe is the first independent (and fourth overall) album release by Cosmic Replicant, following releases on Altar Records, Plusquam Chillout and Pureuphoria Records. This album was inspired by dreams, thoughts, and experiences as well as by the works of various musicians, artists, film directors, science fiction writers, and life itself. The intention is to give a listener a joyful listening experience while being guided into a dreamlike state of mind.
cover
Soul of the Universe was released on 8th of October in 2014 via Ektoplazm under a Creative Commons license. Endless Reflections originally appeared on SiebZehN’s 2012 album Time Equals Eternity. Structural Patterns is a collaboration with Parahype who on 30th of October the same year also published a remix of Pulsar Activity on his SoundCloud page.

On Listening on the Blog: a Request

While I strive to provide a mean to listen to every bit of music I share on-site, the ever evolving nature of technology may occasionally break any media-playing function of this blog. I keep looking for a modern audio player that is easy to handle (both to populate with numerous tracks and to adapt in its visual appearance), doesn’t require additionally hosted files and is both open source and free (remember always to floss!)

So if anyone has knowledge of an audio player fulfilling my requirements, please let me know!

Arborean « Sophic Hydrolith »

Arborean is Fabian Eason, an artist from Brighton in East Sussex.

Sophic Hydrolith is his first EP.
cover
Sophic Hydrolith, this "groove-driven journey through downtempo psychedelia" by Arborean was released on 19th of October in 2014 via free music portal Ektoplazm under a Creative Commons licence. Sophic Hydrolith - which could describe the Philosopher’s Stone - is a soundscape that is influenced by psychedelic trance and ambient (both better knowns as psytrance and psybient, respectively) with a healthy dosis of space ambient and dream and deep trance, where the beat has been limited to give emphasis to sound structure and groove. My personal favourite is the last track, Taigan.

Awt « Winter and Spring »

Awt was a musical project by Anders Walldén from Malmö in Sweden that mixed modern electronica like jungle, dubstep and IDM with a quieter note.

Winter and Spring was originally released in early 2004 but was lost when its host died. Subsequently Anders went back to the studio and remastered the album which then was release on the Experimedia label.
cover

Winter and Spring (the c. re-m,r) was reissued on 29th of April in 2005. While the Experimedia does not indicate any free or open license, Awt’s SoundClick pages gives a Creative Commons license for the tracks. It’s music can be categorized as IDM, somewhere between an atmospheric drum & bass and glitchy and broken beats.
